Michael Smith, Chief Executive Officer
Michael Smith has been Chief Executive Officer of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) since October 2007.
Until June 2007, Mr Smith was President and Chief Executive Officer, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited; Chairman, Hang Seng Bank Limited; Global Head of Commercial Banking for the HSBC Group and Chairman, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad. Previously, Mr Smith was Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Argentina Holdings SA and was subsequently appointed Chairman of HSBC in Argentina in 2000.
Mr Smith joined the HSBC Group in 1978 and during his 29-year career he held a wide variety of posts in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Middle East and South America, including appointments in Commercial, Institutional and Investment Banking, Planning and Strategy, Operations and General Management.
Mr Smith graduated with honours in Economic Sciences in 1978 from City University of London.
He is Chairman of the Australian Bankers’ Association and a Member of both the Business Council of Australia and the Asia Business Council.
Mr Smith is a Director of the Institute of International Finance; a Member of both the Chongqing Mayor’s International Economic Advisory Council and the Shanghai Mayor’s International Financial Advisory Council; and a Fellow of The Hong Kong Management Association. He is also a Director of the Financial Markets Foundation for Children, Financial Literacy Australia Limited and the Financial Literacy Advisory Board.
Mr Smith was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2000 and a Chevalier de l’Ordre du Merite Agricole in 2007.
He is married with three children. His interests include wine, tennis and classic cars.
Shayne Elliott, Chief Financial Officer
Shayne Elliott was appointed Chief Financial Officer of ANZ from June 2012, after a three-month transition period with former CFO Peter Marriott.
Shayne is responsible for all aspects of Finance as well as Legal, Treasury and Investor Relations. In this role, Shayne also has responsibility for Group Strategy and Mergers and Acquisitions.
Prior to this role, Shayne was Chief Executive Officer, Institutional, overseeing all businesses that deal with ANZ's large business, corporate and institutional customers.
Shayne joined ANZ in June 2009. Previously, he was the Head of Business Development, EFG Hermes, the largest investment bank in the Middle East. Previously, Shayne was Chief Operating Officer, responsible for developing corporate strategy, balanced scorecard and goals program, and implementing governance and business management processes.
Shayne was previously with Citigroup where he held various senior positions across geographies and business sectors over the course of 20 years. Some of the roles he held during his time at Citigroup include: CEO Global Transaction Services Asia Pacific, CEO Corporate Bank Australia/NZ & Country Corporate Officer, Vice President Strategic Planning New York, Head of Investor Derivative Sales London, and Head of NZ Derivatives Sales and Trading.
Shayne holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Management Studies and Finance from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Graham Hodges, Deputy Chief Executive Officer
Graham Hodges is Deputy Chief Executive Officer.
Prior to this role, Graham was Chief Executive Officer, New Zealand and a director of ANZ National Bank Limited responsible for the running of ANZ Group's New Zealand business. He was also acting Chief Executive Officer for Australia in 2009.
Graham has held the positions of Group Managing Director, Corporate, Managing Director, Small to Medium Business and Head of Corporate Banking for Australia and New Zealand.
Other prior roles with ANZ include State Manager, Business Banking for Victoria and Tasmania; and Regional Executive, Business Banking Melbourne. In 1995, Graham led a project team, which designed and rolled out a customer profitability tool for the Business and Institutional Bank.
Graham joined ANZ in 1991 and was appointed Chief Economist in 1992, a post he held for three years.
Before ANZ, Graham spent several years with the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC and nine years in Commonwealth Treasury in Canberra.
Graham has a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Monash University.
