Ajay Piramal, Chairman,
Mr. Ajay G Piramal is the Chairman of the Piramal Group. He is known for identifying opportunities ahead of the curve. In the late 1980s, Mr. Piramal took a decision to move out from the dwindling textiles business to pharmaceuticals. This was at a time when international companies were exiting the Indian pharma markets due to various socio-economic reasons. Mr. Piramal bought Nicholas Labs in 1988 at USD 4 million. He took the contrarian approach to invest in the domestic formulations business when others were focused on growing international generics. This strategic move delivered rich dividends. In 2010, the domestic formulations business was valued by Abbott at USD 3.72 billion; a historic sale that valued this business at an unprecedented 9x sales and 30x EBITDA.

Throughout all this history, Mr. Piramal’s guiding principle has been to build businesses that deliver long term value for our stakeholders. Since inception, he has enabled Piramal Enterprises to deliver a 44% CAGR of market cap.

Mr. Piramal has focused on instilling values that has helped to build a Group that is resilient and high on integrity. His commitment to the society has shaped the vision of the Piramal Foundation, which is the social arm of the Group. He also serves as the Chairman of Pratham India, which is the largest non-governmental organization in the education sector, and reaches out to 33 million children through its “Read India” campaign.

Mr. Piramal serves on the Indian Prime Minister’s Task Force on Pharmaceuticals & Knowledge-Based Industries and Council for Trade & Industry. He is a member of the Government of India’s Board of Trade. Mr. Piramal was awarded the “India Innovator of the Year 2008” by media house, CNBC TV18. In 2006, the UK Trade & Investment Council awarded him the “Entrepreneur of the Year” and in 2004, Ernst & Young named him as the “Entrepreneur of the Year” in the Healthcare & Life Sciences category.

Mr. Piramal completed his Masters in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, and completed his Advanced Management Programme from Harvard Business School in 1992. Today, he serves as a member on the Board of Dean’s Advisors at Harvard Business School.
Dr. Swati Piramal, Vice Chairperson
Dr. Swati Piramal has used her background in medicine, public health and business to change the trajectory of healthcare, education, and public policy in India. She is the Vice Chairperson, Piramal Enterprises. a leading drug discovery company which aims to bring affordable medicines to reduce the burden of disease globally. As Director of the Piramal Foundation, she helps promote health in rural India with mobile health services, women’s empowerment projects and supporting community education that create young leaders.

The first woman president of India’s Apex Chamber of Commerce in 90 years, she helped influence important public policies and governance. She is an adviser to India’s Prime Minister in science, technology and industrial policy and was awarded the 2012 Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards for distinguished contribution to the nation. She has helped organize faculty study programs, student internships including President Faust’s recent trip to India, in life sciences and business. Dr. Piramal earned her medical degree, an M.B.B.S, from Mumbai University in 1980 and her MPH in International Health from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1992.

She currently serves on the Board of Deans Advisors of both the Harvard School of Public Health and the Harvard Business School. She was Harvard School of Public Health’s 1992 Student Commencement Speaker and served on a task force on chronic health issues in developing countries.
Vijay Shah, Executive Director & COO
Vijay has been with the Piramal Group for 25 years. Over the Group’s history, he has successfully spearheaded many businesses and is considered an expert in turnarounds. His current role focuses on the healthcare vertical i.e Pharma Solutions, Critical Care and Lab Diagnostics. Vijay additionally oversees the glass packaging business at Piramal Glass and is part of the core mergers and acquisitions team.He is a rank-holder Chartered Accountant, and has been pivotal to the growth of the Piramal Group at every juncture.
Rajesh Laddha, Chief Financial Officer
Rajesh joined the Piramal Group in 2001 as the Chief Financial Officer. He currently manages the finance and legal function of the group. He is also a key member of the mergers and acquisitions team. Rajesh played a critical role in executing the smooth sale and transition of the domestic formulation business to a large pharmaceutical business. Recently, Rajesh played an effective role in the acquisition of US based healthcare information analyst firm, Decision Resources Group.

Rajesh is a qualified Chartered Accountant, a CPA from USA, Management Accounting (CIMA) from UK and Masters in Management and MBA from University of Chicago, USA
Nandini Piramal, Executive Director, Piramal Enterprises
Nandini Piramal leads the Over-The-Counter division of Piramal | Healthcare which has well-known brands like Lacto Calamine and Saridon within its fold. She is also responsible for the Human Resources function at the Group as well as the Operational Excellence team. Furthermore, Nandini is actively involved with the Piramal Foundation’s initiatives including Sarvajal, which is aimed at providing clean and affordable drinking water to rural India. Prior to joining the Piramal Group, Nandini worked at McKinsey as an analyst. She graduated with a BA with Honors from Oxford University and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Jim Lang, Chief Executive Officer
Jim Lang is an accomplished senior executive, consultant, and entrepreneur with broad industry expertise in healthcare, energy and business services. Mr. Lang was the President of IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates (IHS CERA), a recognized leader in energy industry subscription information products, advisory services and events. Prior to IHS CERA, he was President of Strategic Decisions Group (SDG), a leading global strategy consultancy, spending 17 years advising a wide range of global 1000 companies. Most recently, Mr. Lang has been an active private investor and advisor, providing seed and growth capital to a dozen companies in the healthcare, clean tech, and business services space, and he serves on a number of boards. Mr. Lang holds a B.S. summa cum laude in electrical and computer engineering from the University of New Hampshire and an M.B.A. with Distinction from the Tuck School of Business, where he was named an Edward Tuck Scholar.
